The Ronnie Gardiner Method or RGM is a rhythm and music led movement therapy that assists in the initiation of neural relearning. It uses multisensory stimulation that increases neuronal connectivity, activating areas all over the brain by using the power of music. It is both motivational and enjoyable to participants and practitioners; which encourages compliance and develops socialisation skills in group work, although it can be used with individuals. It is an exercise system that enhances cognitive functioning for memory and helps focus attention. RGM is also a movement method that induces neuro-hormonal changes by increasing Dopamine and Serotonin levels. All these activities and demands assist in making the brain change and adapt – leading to the process of Neuroplasticity. That is the goal of all rehabilitation and therapy; to aid in the process of recovery for the client.
The method has been used in Sweden for 25 years, starting with stroke patients, and can be used with all types of neurological disorders especially stroke, Parkinson’s, MS, head injury, early stage dementia etc. You can use it with children as young as about 4 years old and has proved helpful with Dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger’s and many different special learning needs. Children love this method; they love the challenges, creativity, flexibility and fun.
Clients can chose their own music which adds to the motivation. RGM increases strength, balance, co-ordination, motivation, self -confidence. It improves speech, memory, social skills, reading, energy and mood. It is simple, structured but flexible and is measurable. But the main aim is to enjoy the method and have fun with the exercises.
