Distressed not Difficult: Supporting Distressed Behaviour in Children
01 September 2025
Join Early Years Music Scotland to look at translating the science of child development and self-regulation into a simple practice based model
Early Years Music Scotland is delivering a year-long programme of free, high-quality, creative and inspiring continuous professional learning and development for musicians working with children in the early years across Scotland, supported by Creative Scotland's Youth Music Initiative.

This workshop is free-of-charge to musicians who are resident in Scotland and working with children in the early years (0-5yrs). Non-Scottish residents and non-musicians may purchase a ticket.

This workshop will be recorded and available to view for one month following the event. If you are unable to attend live, you can select a 'session recording' ticket. The recording will be sent to all ticket holders within 48 hours of the event. Please book one ticket only.

How we view and respond to a child's behaviour has changed over time. Traditional approaches that are still being used today are reactive, shame inducing and have many limitations. If we really want to minimise the reoccurrence of distressed behaviour and support a child's development, we need to understand the continuum of regulation and the importance of executive functioning.

This workshop translates the science of child development and self-regulation into a simple practice based model.

Key Learning:

-Exploring our thoughts and beliefs about behaviour

-Introducing the continuum of regulation

-Understanding the stress response system

-Exploring a relational framework

-Creating opportunities to strengthen self-regulation and executive functions

The workshop will run for 90 minutes which will include two 10 minute breakout rooms to participate in group activities and discussion.

This workshop will be delivered by Nicola McAllister. Nicola is a trainer and consultant who specialises in collaborative approaches that strengthen children's executive functioning and self-regulation. She has 30 years’ experience of working with some of our most vulnerable children while providing training, consulting and coaching services to those adults who support them. Nicola’s background is in education: she has worked within mainstream settings as well as specialist provisions for children experiencing social, emotional and communication needs. She has also worked as an Education Advisor within the Foster Care sector supporting staff in school and carers at home. Her work as a trainer and consultant spans across education, home and community settings.

Nicola distils the research and science, making it more accessible, helping adults to understand children developmentally and the crucial role that they themselves play in co-regulation. Using tried and tested practical approaches, which nurture relationships and strengthens connections, she develops biology respecting methodologies which will begin to minimise the difficult times and develop the capacities that children need to thrive socially, emotionally, and cognitively.
