In this event, Dr. Stephen Clift will argue for the need for greater critical debate in the field of arts and health research. His current concerns about a lack of critique are expressed in his review (Clift, 2020) of the recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report by Fancourt and Finn (2019) on the evidence base for 'the role of the arts in improving health and wellbeing' and will be further elaborated in a series of 'provocations' to the field in development. As a stimulus for discussion, the talk will focus on three examples of studies looking at the role of music and its impacts, cited in the WHO report, highlighting their limitations and questioning their validity and usefulness.
