The Folk Educators Group is a national networking group of folk arts educators from across England and beyond, run by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS).
This meeting will be hosted by Annie Mawson at her Sunbeams Music Centre and Co-chaired by Carolyn Francis, Kendal based freelance folk arts practitioner, and FEG co-ordinator, Kerry Fletcher.
Outline of the day: Working in Rural Settings
Amongst the inspiring regional presenters are: Annie Mawson, who will be talking about making music with disabled children and adults; Lisa Heywood and Priya Sundar’s cross cultural dance performance and education workshop project with Cotswold morris and Bharatanatyam Indian dance; Carolyn Francis’ work over 20 years, including the Lakeland Fiddlers, and her current focus in teaching fiddle to groups, including whole classes, in primary schools, plus hers and Alex Fisher’s remote schools work teaching clog dancing; Sarah Kekus of Cumbria Music Hub talking about how the hub and partners work together and the challenges and joys of working in rural communities; and an EFDSS update from Sarah Jones, on the National Youth Folk Ensemble, and Rachel Elliott, on the education work across the country, including the Dance Development programme. There will be practical music making and dancing, so bring your instruments, voices and dancing feet!
Having been inspired by the speakers' presentations, there will be the chance for more in-depth discussions and sharing of ideas about creating high-quality projects.
